Everyone loves a good burger but every once in a while, it doesn’t hurt to try something new, especially if it’s delicious and healthy.
This Greek inspired recipe can once again…can be made however you’d like to (this seems to be trending with the recipes I usually post) and you can mess with the amount of ingredients I used as well.
Think of your traditional greek salad but with minimal ingredients. This is your baseline recipe that can be added to, and make it as Greek as you want!
To keep it simple, here are the ingredients I use and what other options you can add:
Ground Turkey
I use ground turkey because I like the light flavor it provides while letting the feta and dressing win the flavor content. Turkey doesn’t have an overpowering taste so it works perfectly in my opinion. However, you can use ground beef, ground bison, or even ground chicken (which may actually have a similar flavor.) As noted in the recipe, I used 90/10 which can taste dry to some people. Adjust how you’d like for your recipe!
Feta
This one is pretty basic but I just use regular feta. However, you can use fat free or a different flavor, like tomato & basil.
Spinach
I used frozen spinach for the pictured recipe however, I’d recommend using fresh spinach as it cooks better and you don’t have to deal with large chunks of frozen spinach when you’re rolling up the burger into a ball.
Dressing
As mentioned in the recipe, I use Newman’s Own Classic Oil & Vinegar so the dressing remains light and does not overpower however, you may consider a true greek dressing to add some intense flavor! Remember, the dressing will possibly char the outside of the burger faster or make it stick to our skillet. Use an appropriate amount so the burger doesn’t get soggy and add some oil or spray to keep it from sticking.
Seasoning
This is absolutely optional however, I like to add a little bit of Himalayan Pink Salt, a dash of onion powder and/or garlic powder to my recipe. Add or remove to your liking!
Caramelized Onions
I simply chopped up some onions and cooked them next to the burgers on the Blackstone grill. You can opt to add them to your burger before rolling into a ball. I just prefer them on top right before serving!
While this is a short list, the recipe will tell you that you can also add anything else you’d like (or remove/substitute any of those items. It won’t make or break the recipe, it will just change the flavor!
Here are some other items you may consider adding or substituting:
- Kalamata Olives (inside or on top)
- Diced Beets (on top)
- Cucumbers (on top)
- Sauteed peppers (on top or inside)
- Diced Tomatoes (on top or inside)
- Chickpeas (on top)
- Ground lamb instead of ground turkey
Lastly, I often serve these burgers with homemade sweet potato fries, or a greek salad with some of the ingredients listed above (chickpeas, cucumbers, kalamata olives, beets). Want to get super fancy? Use tzatziki sauce to dip the burger or drizzle on top like you would a regular burger. The options are endless!
However you like to make it, this twist on your standard burger may just make it into your rotation or as a celebrity appearance on burger night. Enjoy!
Spinach & Feta Turkey Burgers
Equipment
- 1 Medium Mixing Bowl
- 1 Grill or Stove Top
Ingredients
- 1 lb Ground Turkey I use 90/10 however, you may want to use one with more fat for more flavor
- 1/2 cup Feta Any kind; this amount varies based on preference
- 1/3 cup Spinach This amount varies based on preference
- 3 Tbsp Dressing (I use Newman's Own Classic Oil & Vinegar) You can use a greek dressing or any other dressing to change the flavor; this amount varies based on preference
- 2 tsp Onion Powder Or you can add fresh diced onions
- varies Caramelized Onions Optional
Instructions
- Turn on your stove top or grill to medium heat.
- Mix all ingredients (except caramelized onions) into a medium sized mixing bowl.
- Optional: If adding caramelized onions to the patties at the end, slice up onions and add to grill or stove top pan (you can even add them to the same skillet). Set them aside once done.
- Roll meat mixture into 3 inch balls and place on grill or skillet.
- Flat the meat balls into patties and cook for a 3 minutes before flipping.
- Remove from stove once each patty has reached a safe internal temperature.
- Add caramelized onions (or any other toppings) before serving warm.
- Refrigerate any left over patties once they've cooled.
Notes
- I also sometimes add a dash of Himalayan Pink Salt
- You can add other ingredients like Kalamata Olives, tomatoes, peppers, etc.
- Note: Since you've added salad dressing, you may find that the outside of the burgers get a little charred quicker than usual. This is the salad dressing and is normal to occur. You'll want to flip the patties often and/or use an oil or spray to keep it from sticking.
- Burger buns
- Veggies or a salad
- Homemade Fries or Sweet Potato Fries
