Gone are the days where you need to feel guilty about having a sweet tooth. There are many options to hit the spot but they aren’t always the healthiest option. Which leaves us feeling guilt or shame when really, we just had a craving and couldn’t resist. Well, now you can have a high protein easy dessert, specifically one that tastes very similar to Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
But I’m serious, don’t take my word for it. When you see the ingredients you won’t believe how easy it is to make and then once you taste it, you’ll be SHOCKED at how similar it is to the real deal. Except now it has about 20g of protein per bar. It sounds too good to be true, right?
Now usually, I’d say skip right to the recipe however, I wanted to tell you what I change up from the original recipe I found. My addition over unflavored protein really does make a difference but it doesn’t really change the flavor (obviously.)
So before you get all upset that you now need to go buy unflavored protein, just know you don’t have to. If you don’t want to add the 1/4 cup of protein powder, you’ll just add the 1/4 cup of almond flour and it will be identical. I personally like to make changes to recipes and try new things, but you don’t have to.
If you want to see the original, or are interested in more tasty desserts, you’ll need to check out Dee & Sweet’s website. Some of the most amazing recipes are on there – which is where I got this one (before adding the protein powder part)!
To make this recipe how I did, you’ll want to take a look at a few of the ingredients I used (specifically the protein powder.) so you know what branded I did and where I substituted.
Almond Flour
One of my favorite brands is Bob’s Red Mill and the super fine flour makes it so easy to mix. The original recipe calls for 2 1/4 cups HOWEVER, this is where I deviated and took out the 1/4 and replaced it with unflavored protein powder. Do as you please with this one! Even if you opt to use just almond flour, it still has about 18 g of protein so you’ll be just fine with the protein amount either way!
Unflavored Protein Powder
This high protein easy dessert wouldn’t be the same without a little protein powder. I used AGN Roots Irish Dairy Unflavored Protein Powder because it is grass-fed whey and it mixes SO well. Consider buying even a small bag of unflavored protein so that you can add it to other recipes. You can sub up to 1/4 cup of flour in a lot of recipes with protein powder to give it a boost!
Coconut Oil
Any brand works in my opinion however, you’ll want to make sure you see the note where it says to leave a little extra on hand. You’ll need some for the peanut butter mixture (1/4 cup), the chocolate mixture (2 Tbsp.), and then a dollop to spread on the pan if you don’t use spray.
